Course creation

Start with a topic or source material. The creation assistant asks for the missing setup decisions, proposes an outline, and starts generating the content after you approve it. Reviewing the finished lessons is a separate step in the course editor.

For a screenshot walkthrough, follow Create your first course.

1. Start with what you want to teach

Open Create, select Course, and enter a topic. You do not need to specify the whole course in the first message.

For example:

Teach new team members how to use our customer onboarding checklist.

Attach the checklist if the course should follow that document. Your source material gives the assistant the context to teach your organization's procedures. See Attach course materials.

You can also include decisions you have already made, such as the intended audience or a specific number of units. A selected template can supply instructions, source folders, structure, and its own setup questions.

2. Answer the setup questions

The assistant asks one missing question at a time. There is no fixed number of questions: your brief, sources, selected template, and previous answers determine what remains to be decided.

For a Course, setup covers:

Decision What to tell the assistant
Topic and scope What the course should teach and what to leave out.
Audience Whether it is for you, your team, or students.
Experience What the learners already know.
Learning structure Whether to emphasize lessons and quizzes, projects, or another combination.
Course size How many units and topics you want, or the offered size that fits.

Click an offered answer or type your own. For a custom structure, the assistant may also ask how many projects to include per unit. When a source has a detected module structure, it can ask whether to keep that structure instead of starting with a generic size question. Available course sizes depend on your plan.

A detailed brief can answer some of these decisions in advance, helping you move into outline review with your preferences already in place.

3. Review and approve the proposed outline

The outline is the plan for the content that will be generated. Check the title, units, topics, learning goals, activity formats, projects, and tests.

Request changes in the conversation while it is still a proposal. For example:

Use two units. Put the checklist steps in the first unit and a customer handoff scenario in the second.

When the revised plan is right, approve it. Honen generates the activities in the outline and prepares them for your content review.

4. Wait for generation

Follow the build as Honen creates your course structure and requested activities. Each activity shows its status, so you can begin exploring ready content while the rest of the course takes shape.

5. Review the generated course

Once content is ready, open Review & edit and use Preview to inspect the actual learner experience. Read the lessons, try the activities, and verify answers and source use. You can now ask the editor assistant for specific changes to existing content or use Edit directly.

Edit and review a course explains the working draft and applying changes. Edit readings and add images covers direct text and media editing. Configure course settings covers learner and tutor options.

6. Prepare delivery

Publishing, catalog review, and learner access are separate from creating the course. Follow Publishing and review after you have checked the generated content.

For a smaller deliverable, see Choose Course, Assessment, or Atom. Assessment and Atom have different setup questions and do not use the Course length and structure flow.
